Our
sheep herd is grass fed all year from our lush and pesticide free grass. For the
winter months we feed them the hay we harvested here at our farm. The sheep are
fed a diet they are designed to eat: mother’s milk, high quality forages, and
naturally occurring minerals. They are not fed any supplements that are
incompatible with their digestion method, such as commercial feedstuffs, grain,
corn silage, urea, or animal or fish by-products. The sheep do not receive
antibiotics, vaccines, or synthetic growth hormones. Our handling methods
minimize their stress, as stress reduces meat quality and animal health. Being
pastured raised, 100% grass-fed, they are low in fat and exceedingly healthy.
Jackson Mill Farm raises our livestock from birth through
their entire life. Not only are all our animals grass fed (even the chickens),
our livestock having little need for medical intervention (anti-biotics,
hormones, appetite stimulants or other chemicals) because of their low stress
home. Our animals are kept in a very healthy environment, mentally and
physically. A stress free environment is the key to a healthy animal. Exercise,
nutrition and happy animals take a bit more time and management.
Not only is grass a more natural diet for sheep, but it
results in more healthful products. The numerous health benefits can be obtained
from grass feeding livestock. According to various research studies, the meat
and milk from grass-fed sheep contains more conjugated lineolic acid (CLA),
vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, beta-carotene, and vitamin A than the meat and
milk from grain-fed animals. CLA and omega-3 fatty acids are good fats with
anti-cancer, anti-diabetes, and anti-fat properties.
Grass-fed is also deemed better for the environment because
grasslands protect against soil erosion and nutrient run-off and have countless
other ecological benefits.
We have sheep that can be purchased for meat or breeding.
